Because you choose every ingredient, malatang can be as light or as indulgent as you like. Two bowls from the same fridges can be completely different meals. These tips are general guidance, not medical or dietary advice.
What makes a bowl lighter
- Fill half the bowl with vegetables. Leafy greens, mushrooms and other vegetables add volume without much weight, so they also keep the price down.
- Pick a lean protein. Fresh seafood, tofu or sliced meat are better choices than lots of processed balls and fried items.
- Go easy on fried extras. Fried tofu skin and similar items soak up broth and oil.
- Choose a lighter broth. Tomato, Mushroom and Chicken Bone Broth have no chilli. Spicy ma la broths are richer.
- Don't drink all the broth. Most of the salt and oil is in the soup, not the ingredients.

Portion control is built in
Malatang is priced by weight ($4.68 per 100g, 400g minimum), so you see exactly how much you're getting before it's cooked. If you're watching portions, aim for around 400g to 500g with plenty of vegetables.
Allergies and dietary needs
Several of our bases contain peanut, and Chicken Bone Broth contains milk. Allergens are listed on each soup base on the malatang page. Please tell our staff about any allergies or dietary needs before ordering.
